Ethel Platt, M.D. December 27, 1916-December 29, 2007
David Platt, M.D. September 14, 1914-February 3, 2008
The Delaware Academy of Family mourns the loss of two exemplars of Family Medicine and the medical community. The Platts practiced family medicine in Wilmington from 1941 to 1989. The Platts’ practice, now Family Practice Associates, provided obstetric, pediatric and adult care to a diverse population and was among the first in Wilmington to accept Medicaid patients. After retirement, the Platts remained active promoting community health, at the University of Delaware’s Academy of Lifelong Learning and in an outreach program they organized to give health talks to students in Delaware’s public schools. Dr. David Platt also served at the Claymont Clinic and was the author of many articles, editorials and book reviews for the Delaware Medical Journal. The August 2007 issue of the Journal included A Tribute to David Platt, M.D. At a retirement dinner for the Platts in 1989, the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians announced the establishment of the David and Ethel Platt Family Physicians Summer Fellowship to promote interest in family medicine. Each year the Platt Summer Fellowship awards up to four $1,200 fellowships for students to spend a week each with various family doctors in Delaware. This exposure, it is hoped, will help guide students into the field of medicine that the Doctors Platt helped to further in Delaware. The Platt Summer Fellowship is under the direction of M. Diana Metzger, M.D., President of the DAFP Research and Education Foundation. Donations can be made to the David and Ethel Platt Summer Fellowship, c/o Delaware Academy of Family Physicians, P.O.
